Raise-a-mite

RAZORLIGHT wildman Johnny Borrell is desperate to settle down and become a DAD.
The singer, who has been linked with a string of women in the past, can’t wait to hear the patter of tiny feet.
And he admitted he’s jealous of bandmate Andy Burrows who became a dad for the first time in April to baby Chloe. Johnny, 28, said: “Who wouldn’t envy Andy’s life? He’s got a beautiful partner, a beautiful baby. Any sane man would like that happiness.”
Andy’s fiancée Stephanie and daughter have already been on tour with the band. Johnny added: “It’s magical having them around.”
The singer—once linked to Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst—has a new mystery girlfriend but insists his ladies’ man reputation is rubbish. He said: “I’ve always been serious about the girls I’ve dated. I haven’t slept around, not since I was a teenager.”
But Johnny admits he does sometimes still yearn for his carefree days.
Monster Boots, a song on new album Slipway Fires, has the lyrics: “It was all so simple, like it was long ago, and you could fall in love with anyone you know.”
Johnny explained: “There’s no consequences when you’re young. It gets impossible to do that when you’re older, because you want it to mean something. Or I do.”
The first three songs on the album—Wire To Wire, Hostage Of Love and You And The Rest—were written to chart Johnny’s break-up last year with an ex-girlfriend, believed to be Fabiola Gatti.
“Those songs are me straight up talking to . . . someone,” teases Johnny. “They’re variations on the same theme. I don’t know if they should be seen as a trilogy but they’re in that order for a reason, and it was important they started the record.”
Loudmouth Johnny is known for bragging that Razorlight are the best band in the world. But it’s an image he sends up on North London Trash.
Johnny, who lives in Camden, North London, said: “I’m not going to whine about anything, as I helped create that image. When our first album came out, I told every interviewer that I’d die if I didn’t write these songs. Of course that was rather dramatic. But, hey, I was a very dramatic 24-year-old!
“What it ended up with, though, was me reading the papers about Johnny Borrell, a cartoon that had been created. It was a bizarre caricature of a bumptious, careerist, facile monster.
“Even Private Eye wrote a story about me! I thought, ‘Shouldn’t you be bringing down the government?’ Anyway, this ultimate uppity North Londoner I was reading about called Johnny Borrell, it was perfect material for a song.”
Johnny shrugs off the idea that the relatively poor sales of Slipway Fires, which entered the chart at No 4, were down to a reaction against his public image.
“All the great bands have gone through the same thing,” he says. “The only thing to do is keep your head down and make sure you make the best music you can. And we’re going to spend the next six months on tour, proving to people every night what a f***ing great record we’ve just made.”

Better put a new shelf up, Duffy

Pop beauty up for four Brits

THE Brit Awards are here—and it doesn’t look like much will Rain on Duffy’s Parade because she’s up for FOUR gongs.
The Welsh wonder went from unknown in 2007 to the biggest star in music last year.
And now she’s been nominated for Best British Female, Album, Single and Breakthrough act at Wednesday’s awards.
Duffy, 24, who will perform at the star-studded ceremony at London’s Earl’s Court alongside U2, Girls Aloud and Coldplay, said: “It’s brilliant to be nominated for four awards.
“I watched the Brits on TV religiously as a kid, and now I’m going to be singing there. It’s one of those ‘pinch me’ moments that makes me realise how far I’ve come.”
It rounds off an amazing year for Duffy. Her debut album, Rockferry, was Britain’s top-selling record in 2008, and sold 4.5 million copies worldwide. It also earned her a Grammy last week.
Voice
But Duffy has admitted she always knew she was going to be a huge star—despite famously being kicked out of the school choir because her voice was “too big”.
The singer, from the tiny Welsh village of Nefyn, went on: “I’ve felt since I was a little girl that my voice was going to take me places.
“I felt like I was going to belong to the public.”
Her journey to the top wasn’t easy though. Duffy was taken into police protection at 13 after a plot to kill her stepdad Philip Smith.
And in spite of her sensational soul voice, it wasn’t until she was spotted by former Catatonia guitarist Owen Powell on a Welsh TV singing contest that she got her big break.
It eventually led to Duffy meeting her mentor, ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, who helped write and produce Rockferry.
“From the moment Duffy started singing, I knew she’d be great,” he said.
As soon as her first single Mercy flew to No 1, success has been assured—and now sealed by her Brits nominations.
Also nominated for awards, presented by Kylie Minogue, and comedians Mathew Horne and James Corden, are Scouting For Girls who are up for best British Live Act, Breakthrough and Single.
Singer Roy Stride, 28, said: “I’m normally a modest guy, but I really think we deserve the Best Live Act prize. We put on a better show than anyone else.”
Aussie singer Gabriella Cilmi, 17, in the Best International Female category, is less sure she’ll win. “I’m up against Beyoncé,” she winced. “I’d be mad to bet even a fiver that I’m going to beat her or Pink!”
The Brits are live on ITV1 on Wednesday at 8pm.

Jermain Defoe

TOTTERING Hotspur ace Jermain Defoe is struggling to keep his feet on the ground as he recovers from a toe fracture with help from hot totty Chantelle Houghton.

As his club battles to beat the drop, Jermain is kicking back in Dubai with drop-dead gorgeous Chantelle, 25.

The Big Brother babe’s had surgery to go from 32B to 32DD, making her as impressive up front as her £15 million striker boyfriend.

He couldn't keep his eyes off her
One onlooker on the beach said: “Chantelle looked absolutely stunning in a bikini and Jermain certainly noticed.

“He couldn’t keep his eyes off her as she wandered around. And when she came back to the sunbeds he couldn’t keep his hands off her.”

And at one point Chantelle embraced him during an innocent romp on the beach.

Chantelle, 25, whose marriage to Ordinary Boy Preston lasted a year—is convinced Jermain, 26, is ‘the one’.

And he Defoe-nitely looks quite keen too.

Britney's Shoes

Many of you have been commenting on the red shoes Brit has been wearing on the 'If U Seek Amy' video set. Some of the more fashion forward folks have noticed the red sole of the shoe... yes, they are Christian Louboutin! The shoes aren't available in stores just yet, they are actually an exclusive sample. You'll see a lot more of these Loubs in the video.

Car Ace

With the current Ace, AC throws its hat into the ring as a manufacturer of truly luxurious sports cars. This is mostly thanks to a long term contract with Lotus who now supply the 350bhp engine which can be fitted to the Ace as an option, the alternative being a 305bhp Ford V8 "Quad Cam" unit. Apart from fearsome supercar performance, the Ace also boasts creature comforts appropriate to a prestige vehicle, such as air conditioning, full hide interior and satellite navigation to name but a few.

Technology

The CommanderGauntlet(tm) is the latest wireless accessory to come from NetworkAnatomy, the Pleasanton, CA-based award-winning designer and manufacturer of advanced interoperable communication systems. The one-size-fits-all gauntlet is a wireless system that contains a two-way radio, cellular and satellite technologies, a PC-based interactive monitor, an interlaced audio/video camera, integrated power systems and extreme lighting to provide its user with "out-front" communications access without restricting hand movements or use of fingers. The waterproof gauntlet is ruggedized to withstand bumps and impacts, measures 15 inches in length and is pliable enough to provide unrestricted hand and wrist movement. The material used in constructing the gauntlet was chosen to provide a snug fit on any adult forearm for extended periods of time without constricting blood flow.Doug Linman, CEO and chief designer of the high-tech device says that the inspiration for the lightweight accessory comes directly from the field. "These wireless devices were designed to work as an extension to our CommanderPacks(tm) in any harsh environment where the user has to be on the move or has to use both hands, such as in a Search and Rescue operation, in fire zones or any emergency situation. The user can make or receive a call using radio, cellular or satellite frequencies, light the area and transmit video images, access incident forms from their on-board PC - even e-mail documents from their forearm - without having to stop or open their CommanderPack." The CommanderPack is the first lightweight, self-contained communications system designed for deployment anywhere on earth at a moment's notice. The 11 lb. system is worn like a back pack and comes with a helmet nest featuring a micro video camera, microphone and extreme lighting. The communications and information management gear can be accessed by opening the waterproof pack or by wireless controls from the optional gauntlet.

Biometrics for secure mobile connections

Though security applications that verify a person's identity based on their physical attributes, such as fingerprint readers or iris scanners, have been in use for some time, biometric security has only recently started to appear in mobile phones, PDAs and notebook computers where the need for miniaturisation represents a technological challenge. So far biometric data has been used to tie the device to a person to prevent it from being used illegitimately if lost or stolen. But the IST project SecurePhone is taking a new approach, employing physical attributes to enable the user to digitally sign audio, text or image files, providing proof of their origin and authenticity."As far as we know there is no other biometrically-enabled digital signature application available for mobile devices that can guarantee security by storing and processing all sensitive information on the device's SIM card," explains SecurePhone technical coordinator Roberto Ricci at Informa in Italy. "Because biometric data never leaves the device's SIM card and cannot be accessed, except by the verification module which also runs on the SIM card, the user's biometric profile is completely safe. This is important to meet the highest privacy requirements."Although existing communications infrastructure based on the GSM, GPRS and UMTS mobile systems provides a secure means of communication, it lacks any robust method of user identification. Text, audio and image files can be sent by anyone to anyone with no authentication and there are no guarantees the person you are talking to in a phone conversation, if you've never met them before, is really who they claim to be.The upshot is that data exchanged over mobile devices is of limited use for legally binding transactions even though mobile devices, given their ubiquity, would be a prime candidate for carrying out e-commerce (or m-commerce), managing business processes such as signing contracts or even in securing the exchange of data in e-healthcare and e-government systems.

A digitally signed and authenticated voice recording during a telephone conversation would, for example, give the speaker's words legal value."The aim is to enable users to exchange information that can't be disputed afterward. That could be a voice recording that is authenticated to eliminate any doubt about who the speaker is, what they actually said and prove that it has not been manipulated," Ricci explains. "To achieve that it is necessary to digitally sign the data and to ensure that only the legitimate user can perform the signing."The system developed by the SecurePhone project partners consists of two main elements. The first, an authentication module, uses biometric security applications to verify the user's identity. That in turn gives them access to the second module which digitally signs the data using a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). "Rather than relying on something you possess – you can forget a PIN code or write it down and lose it – biometric security relies on what you are," Ricci notes. The system, which is designed primarily for PDA-phones but could also be used in new generation smart phones and WiFi-enabled PDAs, offers three methods of biometric identification. One employs the digital cameras that have become commonplace in mobile devices along with a face recognition application to identify the user based on their facial features. Another uses voice recognition software – also detecting any asynchrony between speech and lip movements - and the third verifies the handwritten signature of the user on the device's touch screen. The three methods are used in combination to enhance the overall levels of security and reliability, and most importantly they require no hardware additions to mobile devices."The SecurePhone platform is entirely software based. This is important if it is to be adopted by device manufacturers as it keeps costs down and makes implementing it much easier. There is no need to add fingerprint or iris scanners. Instead, the system uses elements that already exist in the device and which serve alternative purposes as well, while the type of verification carried out is non-intrusive for the user," Ricci says. The project partners are currently working on the final integration of the system ahead of trials of a finished prototype that are expected to begin in August. Ricci notes that so far the different elements of the application have performed well during laboratory testing.Despite SecurePhone's focus on research, ricci notes the the resultin application is commercialy appealing and that the project partners are planning a further project with the aim of bringing the technology to market."We wouldprobably aim at the niche markets at first, such as busy executives, e-government or e- healthcare, and then expand from there," he says.

Bangladesh guard mutiny 'is over'

Civilians were caught up in the violence
Bangladeshi border guards have ended their mutiny, surrendering weapons and freeing hostages, the government says.
A government spokesman, speaking from inside the compound in the capital, Dhaka, where the troops had been holding out, said the crisis was over.
The statement came after tanks surrounded the guards' barracks and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina threatened tough action unless they surrendered.
The mutiny began in Dhaka on Wednesday and spread around the country.
"All the rebel troops have surrendered with their arms and the process has been completed," Sheikh Hasina's spokesman Abul Kalam Azad said of the Dhaka mutineers.
He urged rebel troops outside the capital to lay down their arms as well.
Nearly 50 people are thought to have died on Wednesday in clashes involving the regular army at the border guards' Dhaka headquarters.
The mutiny is believed to have been triggered by anger over pay and conditions.
Grievances
Earlier on Thursday, in a televised address to the nation, the prime minister called on the border guards in the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) to abandon what she called their "suicidal action".

"Lay down your guns immediately and go back to barracks," she said.
"Do not force me to take tough actions or push my patience," she said.
The government offered the border guards a general amnesty, and the prime minister promised to look into the soldiers' grievances.
The BDR has 70,000 men stationed at 42 camps across the country, including 40,000 on the borders.
The crisis began on Wednesday at about 0930 local time (0330 GMT) with heavy fighting. An army helicopter patrolling above the barracks was shot at and mortar rounds were also fired.
Spreading mutiny
By early Thursday, border guards in at least 12 different towns and cities were reported to have seized control of their barracks.
There were unconfirmed reports of gunfire in the main port city of Chittagong, at Feni, on the eastern border with India, in Rajshahi in the north west, and Sylhet in the north.

Soldiers were sent to the barracks seized by mutinous border guards
Similar incidents were reported in Chittagong, Cox's Bazaar, Feni and Khulna in the south.
The police chief in the north-eastern Moulivibazar district told the AFP news agency that the border guards were "firing indiscriminately".
In some cases, the border guards took their officers hostage, and in others they forced them to leave, reports said.
Some guards had begun laying down their arms on Thursday at their barracks in the Pilkhana area of Dhaka when heavy gunfire resumed.
Schools in the surrounding area were closed for the day and mobile phone service was suspended across the country in a bid to stop the rebellion spreading.
Indian border officials told the BBC that all the posts on the West Bengal border were closed, as were posts in the north-eastern state of Tripura.
